Overview
HLA Typing High Resolution is a molecular genetic test that identifies the HLA alleles of an individual at six clinically important loci: HLA-A, HLA-B, HLA-C (Class I) and HLA-DRB1, HLA-DQB1, HLA-DPB1 (Class II). The HLA genes are located on chromosome 6p21 (MHC region) and are among the most polymorphic genes in the human genome. They play a central role in immune recognition and in distinguishing self from non-self.
Methodology
The test uses DNA extracted from the patient’s sample, followed by targeted amplification of the HLA loci and next-generation sequencing (NGS). Results are analyzed with specialized HLA bioinformatics software and compared against the IPD-IMGT/HLA database, which gives allele-level (high-resolution) typing and reduces the ambiguities that low- and intermediate-resolution methods leave.
